Sliding door wardrobe in WOODEXPERT (2/3) – Expanding the library
WOODEXPERT provides many tools that can help you design a set of furniture in a quick and easy way. In this article we show how to save your own models (e.g. bodies) to the library.
Method 1: Saving components from a project
Let’s say that while working on a project I have designed a furniture body according to our company’s standards. For example, I added feet, a plinth and confirmat screws. I have also picked the proper configuration and adjusted the parameters. Now I would like to save this model to the library, so that I don’t have to make all these adjustments every time.

I open “Create component” tool. I’m asked to specify the name of my new component (the name under which it will appear in the library), the name for the new folder and where that folder will be created in WOODEXPERT library.

When I click “Copy”, a new folder is created in specified location, the component is copied into it and opened in SOLIDWORKS. It’s fully independent from the original.

Now we can make necessary changes: delete unnecessary components, add other components from the library, add or remove configurations etc. Finally I open “Edit component definition” tool. We use it to adjust the parameters of a library component, such as its name, type, code etc. One important part is “Variables mapping” tab. It’s used to specify which global variables of this assembly are to be available to the user as WOODEXPERT parameters that he can control when inserting this component. In this case, I don’t want the user to have access to “sides_x” (Sides offset from sides) and “slats” (Slat width), so I disable mapping for them.

After saving and closing the file, the new component is available in the library.

I can create new category, change its name (by pressing F2 on the keyboard) and drag my new component there with a mouse.

Method 2: Copying a library component
Second method starts with copying an existing library component. I close all files, right-click on a desired component and click “Copy component”. As in the previous case, I need to enter the name for the new component, name for the new folder and its location.

New component will appear in the same category as the original. Like in the previous case, I can insert new components from the library, add and remove configurations etc.

What’s next?
In other parts of the series we discuss advanced component insertion functions and copying whole projects.
